Cockermouth Heritage Group
The Cockermouth Heritage Group is part of Kirkgate Arts, based at the Kirkgate Centre in Cockermouth. We research and record all aspects of Cockermouth’s history, and that of the surrounding area. We collect (or copy) old photographs, as well as artefacts of all kinds that were made, used or owned in our area. We now have a considerable collection of items, which are used in regular exhibitions at the Kirkgate Centre, or to answer local and family history queries.
This is an exciting time for the Group. The Kirkgate Centre is embarking on an ambitious modernisation project which will bring to life the history of the building. In addition, the project will give us flexible exhibition space so we will have the opportunity to put together small displays and exhibitions on local heritage themes more often. There are also plans to undertake an oral history project and to digitise the collection.
We meet on Monday evenings in the Egremont Room at the Kirkgate Centre between 7.45 p.m. and 9.30 p.m., when we work with our collection, and discuss any issues/queries relating to local or family history. We would welcome new members so if you are interested in local history and would like to join us please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Whilst we are unable to offer a family history research service, we are happy to help with individual family history queries, and can offer a look-up service in directories and limited family files that we hold. Similarly, we are happy to answer local history queries. All enquiries should be sent to email@example.com
