The Heritage Project
Over the next two years we will be working to modernise the building and develop the Kirkgate Centre into a community hub for arts and heritage. The project will celebrate the rich heritage of the people of Cockermouth and reveal the history of the Kirkgate building over the last 150 years. New displays and state-of-the-art technology will tell the stories of People and Place, Work and Play, Cockermouth Customs and Industry, providing visitors with innovative ways of experiencing heritage and delving into the history of Cockermouth. We will offer an exciting programme of heritage and craft-based activities, creative learning opportunities, workshops and events for everyone.
Ideas for interpretation include digital wallpaper reflecting the building’s history as a school, and flexible dedicated exhibition space with museum-standard display cases.
What will happen during the project?
As well as working hard to put together the stage 2 application to the Heritage Lottery Fund, we are enjoying piloting different types of heritage activities (click here to see examples of recent activities) We are working with an innovative team of interpretation designers to help us bring to life the building’s heritage and that of the town. We have also been collecting feedback from our audiences and from the wider community about what sort of heritage events and activities they would like to see taking place in the new building.
