The Kirkgate was converted from the former derelict All Saints School through the hard work and help of local people, charities and businesses. It is Cockermouth's main arts venue with an exhibition space and 125 seat theatre/cinema.
Managed and run entirely by volunteers and supported by over 200 members, it has a varied and exciting programme attracting many nationally acclaimed theatre groups and high quality musical events. The cinema group strives to show a wide range of films from the successful and popular to the less mainstream, notable and interesting films that international cinema has to offer.
The Kirkgate is located just off Cockermouth's Market Place, only 2 minutes walk from the town centre. For a location map click here.

The ancient town of Cockermouth - one of Britain's 51 "gem towns" recommended for preservation - is situated in the most beautiful corner of England, The Lake District in Cumbria.
This historic town has long held an attraction for writers, poets and artists - the most notable being William Wordsworth and Percy Kelly. It continues to be a culturally rich town with attractions like William Wordsworth's birthplace, the newly opened Percy Gallery. With some wonderful restaurants like the Quince and Medlar together with Jennings Brewery, The Toy and Model Museum, The Printing House to name only a few, Cockermouth is a very popular town to visit.

The Shee are an exceptional all-female band showcasing powerful vocals and instrumental prowess. Described as ‘flirtatiously funky’ by The Scotsman, their adventurous brew of Scottish folk, Gaelic song, and bluegrass has earned them fast growing recognition. As well as successful performances at festivals including Celtic Connections and Sidmouth Folk Week, The Shee demonstrate an impressive array of individual musical achievements including BBC Radio Scotland's Young Traditional Musician 2006 as well as members performing with acclaimed traditional music groups such as Scottish folk orchestra ‘The Unusual Suspects’, ‘Kathryn Tickell Band’ and Scandinavian group ‘Frigg’.

Kasaï Masaï brings the traditional sound of remote equatorial African villages to London, picking up a contemporary twist on the way. Led by Nickens Nkoso, they play ancestral music which has been passed on from generation to generation, their sound is rooted in the healing power of percussion and chanting combined with the majestic Congolese folk guitar and jazz saxophone.
At the passionate live shows audiences find it impossible to stand still in the presence of such absorbing African rhythms. Written in Swahili, Lingala and Kimongo, the lyrics reflect the cultural diversity of a region where more than four hundred languages are spoken.
Nickens has previously collaborated with artists such as Koffi Olomide, Papa Wemba, Kanda Bongoman, Mose Fan Fan, Samba Mapangala and many more. He has appeared at Glastonbury, Womad, Weltnacht (Germany), on Andy Kershaw`s World & New, Later with Jools Holland, John Peel Sessions, BBC3 World Music Day and the African Nations Cup.
